Becoming Cerelia

A Song For A Late Saturday Night
Back to Full Blog

This is a song that has multiple meanings.  It's the song The Gambler by Kenny Rogers.  According to the words itself it's about gambling.  "You've got to know when to hold 'em, Know when to fold 'em, Know when to walk away, Know when to run."  It's also about life, knowing when to stay, when to get rid of something, when to run away and leave something.  Well you get the picture.  :)

Here's a video of Kenny Rogers performing this song.

Kenny Rogers "The Gambler"

On a warm summer's eve
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with the gambler
We were both too tired to sleep
So we took turns a-starin'
Out the window at the darkness
The boredom overtook us, he began to speak

He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind my sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice"

So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette
And asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet
And his faced lost all expression
He said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right

You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
Know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

Every gambler knows
That the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away
And knowin' what to keep
'Cause every hand's a winner
And every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for
Is to die in your sleep"

And when he finished speakin'
He turned back toward the window
Crushed out his cigarette
And faded off to sleep
And somewhere in the darkness
The gambler he broke even
And in his final words
I found an ace that I could keep

You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

You've got to know when to hold 'em
(When to hold 'em)
Know when to fold 'em
(When to fold 'em)
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

Well I hope your day was great and that you have a wonderful Sunday.  :)

Hi Cerelia,

You are so right about the lyrics to this song. You can read them in a shallow manner or you can read between the lines and the whole song speaks of what we face in life. Great post!

Thanks CM :) I really like Kenny Rogers music, I just had my Sweetie download a bunch for me. He's got a great voice and my grandmother and one of my aunts used to listen to him all the time so when I visited I'd hear him. So listening to him just brings back lots of happy memories of times I wish could come back. Unfortunately 2 people from those happy times are no longer with us and that's just very sad. My grandfather (maternal) and my father (heart attack) both died in their early 50s. For my father it's been just over 7 years and for my grandfather it's been almost 16 years. It's hard to believe that it's been that long since he died (colon cancer). My father never saw me get married (we got married a few months after he died).

Ah well, I think that's enough nostalgia for now. lol

Wow, that does bring back some happy memories! And like you, Cerelia, I would love to have those times back... Ahh... if only.

Oh, and the man can sing! I just wish he had never had plastic surgery. I was in love with him before I even hit my teen years!
